What is a Normalized Cut-Throat Business Persona?
Normalized Cut-Throat Business Persona is a mouthful to say. It is somewhat of a fancy way of describing a phenomenon found in leadership from small to big companies and corporations. To help with the explanation, there will be definitions throughout the article.
Normalization- noun (sociology) or social normalization, the process through which ideas and behaviors that may fall outside of social norms come to be regarded as “normal”.
The phenomenon is a forceful demand to lack empathy, sympathy, and compassion when holding a high position within a company or corporate setting. In other words, you are told or expected to be a (Cannot say it here so click the link to finish the sentence) BLANK.
Cut-throat- adj. (of a competitive situation or activity) fierce and intense; involving the use of ruthless measures.
The problem with the cut-throat persona is many individuals have a hard time having one persona over the other. That is, be nice and compassionate(persona 1) or just mean(persona 2). Again this is where the lever scale comes into play.
There seems to never be an in-between. I believe some people in higher positions want to be compassionate, but struggle to do so with pressures from superiors who are not. This creates the shaky ground of being the flip-flop leader that nobody likes. It is not kosher to exhibit outlandish behavior one day and then the next be a saint.
Persona- noun the aspect of someone’s character that is presented to or perceived by others.
I say with confidence that it is possible to be direct, compassionate, and get a job done effectively. Many individuals who disagree either do not care, lack tact, or need to revisit the balance on their lever scale.
Tact-noun. adroitness and sensitivity in dealing with others or with difficult issues.
The individuals who handle situations by being a BLANK typically will spread this same behavior to their subordinates. This is terrible practice since this person has become part of the normalized group who indirectly participates in egregious behavior. I fully understand that pressure gets to people and…
